Lonavala is a prominent hill station in the Sahyadri Ranges of Maharashtra, ~622m above sea level, midway between Mumbai and Pune. Known for dense forests, ancient 2nd-century BC Buddhist rock-cut caves (Karla and Bhaja), and dramatic monsoon waterfalls. A key weekend retreat for Maharashtra's urban population — and the birthplace of Chikki, India's iconic hard candy. Lohagad and Visapur forts offer trekking with Maratha-era history.
Best time to visit
Best in the monsoon (Jun–Sep) when the waterfalls roar and the hills turn emerald; winters (Oct–Feb) are crisp and great for forts and caves. Avoid peak-monsoon weekends if you dislike crowds and traffic on the Expressway.
